Images of the Asad family, above all of Hafiz al-Asad (r. 1970-2000) and Bashar al-Asad (2000-today), were omnipresent in pre-war Syria. However, motivations for hanging one of the portraits varied and in many cases the material surrounding, the context of the image, tell us in how far the (former) president is valued -- or left to fall into dust and decay.
