Enamel used to be a widespread material for household goods in Syria. These were mostly imported from China as the "Peoples' Republic of China" extensively produced enamel and due to socialist alliances trade relations were and still are rather deep. But enamel has substituted metal and enamel in China. So, in prewar Syria enamel items became less and less available and cheap plastic household goods "made in China" spread.
