Supermarket Koran book rest
Supermarket Koran book rest ( Syria, 2009 )
prayer wood mushaf (Koran copy) shopping malls learning
Collection : religious duties
Age/Era :
2000–2009

The Koran is traditionally put on a book rest (رِحال) with the iconic x-shape. This means the reciting or studying person is kneeling or sitting on the floor. Finding this object on a supermarket shelf in one of the few pre-war shopping malls of Damascus was surprising, since religious items were not on sale in supermarkets usually but rather in special stores or in the traditional markets.
